Quick answer: TikTok Shop listing optimization means building a listing that follows TikTok’s Product Listing Policy and matches how shoppers search: a clear title built as brand, product, use, type and key feature; up to nine square images with a pure white main image and no added text; complete category attributes and search terms; and an honest review program. Listings that meet those standards are easier to find in search and convert better once found.

A strong product can still stall on TikTok Shop if the listing lets it down. Creators send shoppers to the product page, the Shop Tab sends searchers there, and GMV Max sends paid traffic there. Every one of those visits ends on the same title, images and attributes.

This guide covers what TikTok’s own policy requires, a title formula with before and after examples, an image plan for all nine slots, the attributes that matter, and how to build reviews without breaking the rules. It sits in our product research series, which starts with our framework for finding TikTok Shop winning products.

What TikTok checks in a listing

TikTok Shop’s US Product Listing Policy, last updated in September 2026, sets the rules for titles, images, video, descriptions, categories, attributes and variations. Breaking them can lead to Account Health Rating point deductions, listing removal or loss of selling access, so treat the policy as the baseline, not a suggestion.

Beyond compliance, TikTok grades listing quality. Influencer Marketing Hub, reporting on a TikTok guideline release, described three tiers: Poor, Fair and Good. Poor listings lack critical information or use low quality images and promotional text. Good listings have detailed descriptions, high resolution images and accurate attributes.

You can see TikTok’s suggestions for each product in Seller Center under Products, Manage Products, Improve Listing Quality, then Optimize. TikTok’s SEO and Discovery lesson recommends using those suggestions as a starting point and then adjusting for accuracy, since the seller remains responsible for what is published.

The title formula

The title does two jobs. It tells TikTok’s search system what the product is, and it tells a shopper scrolling on a phone whether to tap. Both reward clarity over cleverness.

TikTok’s recommended structure

TikTok’s SEO and Discovery lesson suggests this format: Brand + Product + Application + Type + Main Features or Advantages. Include the brand only if you are authorized to use it, state the use case, name the product type and highlight one or two key features.

We use a slightly reordered version that puts the searchable product noun as early as possible:

[Brand] + [Core product noun] + [Top differentiator] + [Use case or audience] + [Size, count or key spec]

The rules your title must follow

The Product Listing Policy sets several hard rules for titles:

  • Capitalize each word except prepositions, conjunctions and articles. Do not use all capital letters.
  • Abbreviate units of measure, such as cm, oz, in and kg.
  • State multipack quantities clearly, such as “10 ct” or “Pack of 10.”
  • Keep size and color in the variation titles, not the main title.
  • Do not include your seller name or a link, and do not use special characters or alternate typefaces in place of letters.
  • Do not add irrelevant or deceptive descriptions, brands or attributes to attract traffic.

On length, Influencer Marketing Hub reported TikTok’s guidance as 40 to 150 characters, free of promotional language, clickbait and repeated terms. Check the limit shown in your product editor, since it can change. Whatever the limit, put the words that matter in the first 40 to 50 characters, because mobile layouts cut titles short.

Before and after examples

The examples below use “[Brand]” as a placeholder. Each “after” title follows the formula and the policy rules.

Product Before After
Face serum BEST Glow Serum SALE Viral Skincare Must Have [Brand] Vitamin C Face Serum with Hyaluronic Acid for Dull Skin, 1 fl oz
Phone accessory magnetic phone holder car mount car phone holder phone mount [Brand] Magnetic Car Phone Mount for Dashboard and Air Vent, 360 Degree Rotation
Kitchen tool Amazing Veggie Chopper You Need This [Brand] Vegetable Chopper with 4 Blades and Container for Meal Prep, 1.2 L
Leggings Black Leggings Size M High Waist Gym Yoga Leggings Women [Brand] High Waisted Leggings for Women with Pockets, Squat Proof Workout Tights
Pet supply Dog Poop Bags Best Price Free Shipping [Brand] Dog Poop Bags with Dispenser, Leak Proof and Unscented, 300 ct

Notice what changed. Promotional words such as “best,” “sale” and “free shipping” are gone. Repeated keywords are replaced by one clear product noun plus specific features. In the leggings example, color and size moved out of the title and into variations, as the policy requires.

Pro tip: Write the title from the words in your keyword research, not from your packaging. Shoppers search “veggie chopper” far more naturally than a trademarked product name. If the casual term and the formal term differ, use the more common one in the title and the other in search terms.

Search terms and product highlights

Two optional fields sit just below the title in the product editor, and both are worth filling in.

Search terms are backend keywords that shoppers never see. TikTok’s Seller University guide says they are used directly by its search engine to match products with customer searches, and that they do not carry the same restrictions as product titles. Use them for synonyms, alternate spellings and use cases that would clutter the title.

Product highlights are short bullet points shown on the product page. TikTok recommends 3 to 5 key features and says highlights help products appear in more relevant search results. Content in both fields must be consistent with the product, and TikTok may delete content that is not.

Image specs and a nine slot image plan

What the policy requires

The Product Listing Policy is specific about images:

  • Up to 9 images per listing, one of which is the main image.
  • All images must be square and at least 600 x 600 pixels.
  • The main image must show the front of the physical product on a pure white background.
  • Additional images should show the front, back, sides, details and accessories. Multiple images of the same angle are not allowed.
  • No added logos, text, borders, watermarks or graphics covering the product or in the background.
  • No placeholders or digital renderings, and images must be in color.
  • Children’s swimwear and undergarments must be shown flat, with no child models or mannequins.

Each listing can also carry one video, with a maximum file size of 5 MB.

The no added text rule matters if you are coming from Amazon. The infographic images many Amazon sellers use, with benefit callouts and arrows over the product, conflict with this policy on TikTok Shop. Put benefit messaging in the listing video, highlights and description instead.

A plan for all nine slots

Influencer Marketing Hub’s summary of TikTok’s guidance recommended at least five high quality images. We aim to fill most of the nine slots, with each image answering a different shopper question.

Slot Image Question it answers
1 Front of product, pure white background, product filling the frame What is it?
2 Back of product, showing labels or ingredients panel What is in it, and what does the label say?
3 Side or three quarter angle How thick, deep or tall is it?
4 Close up of the key feature or material Is it well made?
5 Product open, unfolded or in its working position How does it work?
6 Everything included, laid out together What do I get in the box?
7 Accessories or attachments on their own What do the extra parts look like?
8 Packaging What will arrive at my door?
9 Detail that addresses the top complaint in competitor reviews Will it have the problem other products have?

Shoot all images in the same lighting so the set looks consistent, and make sure colors match the real product. Color mismatch is one of the easiest ways to generate “not as described” returns.

Descriptions that convert and comply

The Product Listing Policy sets a minimum of 30 words for descriptions and recommends 3 to 5 bullet points. Influencer Marketing Hub’s summary of TikTok’s guidance suggested at least 500 characters, organized with clear headings and spacing.

A practical structure:

  1. One opening sentence that states what the product is and the main problem it solves.
  2. Three to five bullets, each starting with a capital letter and covering one benefit with a concrete detail.
  3. Specifications: exact measurements, materials, capacity and compatibility. The policy asks you to spell out units here, such as “inch,” and to state the country of origin.
  4. Care and warranty details where they apply.
  5. Ingredients, listed from highest to lowest by weight, for products that have them.

Do not include email addresses, website URLs, seller specific information or references to other listings. Avoid unproven claims and misleading before and after images, which the policy lists as misleading information.

Categories, attributes and variations

Attributes are the structured fields TikTok asks for once you choose a category. They feed filters, search matching and listing quality, and they are where many listings quietly lose points.

Category and brand

Choose the most accurate category. The policy treats a wrong category as a violation and asks sellers to check auto suggested categories before publishing. Some categories also require approval or documentation before you can list. The brand field must be correct, and obscuring or omitting brand information is prohibited.

Required and high value attributes

  • Mandatory fields: title, description, brand, images, variations where applicable, and legally required disclosures such as California Proposition 65 and choking hazard warnings.
  • Sizing: fashion items need full size information. Nonfashion items need dimensions such as length, width, height or volume.
  • Package data: package weight and dimensions must be accurate. They also drive shipping and fulfillment charges, so errors cost money twice.
  • What’s in the box: list every item included.
  • Category specific fields: Influencer Marketing Hub’s summary highlighted ingredients and benefits for beauty, standardized sizing for fashion, and specifications such as battery life and screen size for electronics.

Fill in optional attributes as well as required ones. Each one is another structured signal that can match your product to a filter or search.

Variations

All variations of a product belong on one product page, and each variation is its own SKU. Variations must be accurate versions of the same product, such as different sizes, colors or scents. The policy prohibits duplicate listings for the same product and prohibits combining separate standalone products into one listing, with an exception for manufacturer bundles and multipacks that have their own GTIN (Global Trade Item Number, the barcode number).

Reviews: build them within the rules

Reviews affect both conversion and visibility. TikTok’s guide to customer reviews says reviews are public on the product page and the seller profile, stay visible even if the order is refunded, and that many poor ratings can lower a shop’s search rank. Customers can leave a review within 60 days of delivery.

What is not allowed

TikTok’s US Review Policy, updated in June 2026, prohibits sellers from:

  • Offering rewards for reviews, including money, gift cards, free products, discounts, refunds or rebates, whether in messages, videos or LIVEs.
  • Asking customers to change or remove reviews, or discouraging reviews.
  • Asking only satisfied customers for reviews, or making repeated review requests.
  • Using or selling review services, or redirecting reviews to other feedback channels.

Enforcement can include violation points, listing removal and, for review services, immediate suspension of selling privileges. TikTok’s reviews guide also says not to put cards in packages asking for positive reviews.

What is allowed

The Review Policy makes an exception for TikTok Shop’s official incentivized review tool. The review coupon feature lets you fund a coupon that is issued automatically after a buyer leaves a qualifying review: at least 11 words, or a photo or video, approved by TikTok. Negative reviews qualify too, so the incentive is for leaving a review, not a good one.

Coupons can be a fixed amount (at least $3 off) or a percentage (5% to 50% off), only one review coupon campaign can run at a time, and these reviews are labeled as incentivized. It is a useful way to build early review volume on a new listing.

Imported reviews from other platforms are labeled with their source and, according to TikTok, do not affect ratings or search ranking on TikTok Shop. The durable way to build ratings is the obvious one: an accurate listing, on time shipping and quick responses to problems.

Other images Different angles, details and accessories, no repeats, colors accurate
Video One video under 5 MB showing the product in use
Description At least 30 words, 3 to 5 bullets, specs, care, origin, no URLs
Category and attributes Correct category, brand, all required and optional fields, accurate package data
Variations All on one page, no duplicate listings

Run this audit on every new listing and again whenever a product’s conversion rate drops. Before changing prices to fix conversion, check the margin impact with our TikTok Shop profit calculator.

Good listings also make paid traffic more efficient. When GMV Max sends a shopper to a clear, complete product page, more of those clicks turn into orders, which helps the campaign hit its ROI target.

Next steps

Start with your top three products by sales. Rewrite each title with the formula, fill the search terms and highlights, rebuild the image set to the nine slot plan and complete every attribute. Then watch conversion rate and search impressions in Seller Center over the following weeks.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a TikTok Shop product title be?

Influencer Marketing Hub reported TikTok’s guidance as 40 to 150 characters, and the product editor shows the current limit for your category. Whatever the limit, put the brand, product noun and main feature in the first 40 to 50 characters, because mobile layouts cut titles short.

What size should TikTok Shop product images be?

TikTok’s US Product Listing Policy requires square images of at least 600 x 600 pixels, with up to 9 images per listing. The main image must show the front of the product on a pure white background with no added text, logos, borders or watermarks.

Can I use Amazon listing images on TikTok Shop?

Clean product photos usually transfer well, but Amazon style infographics with text callouts, badges or arrows conflict with TikTok’s rule against added text and graphics in product images. Replace them with clean angle and detail shots and move the benefit messaging into the video, highlights and description.

How do I get my first reviews on TikTok Shop?

Use TikTok Shop’s review coupon feature, which issues a seller funded coupon to buyers who leave a qualifying review regardless of whether it is positive or negative. Do not offer gifts, refunds or discounts outside that tool, and do not ask only happy customers, since both break the Review Policy.
