Quick answer: To price a TikTok Shop product for margin, subtract every per order cost from the selling price: landed product cost, shipping and fulfillment, the referral fee, affiliate commission, other costs and ad spend. What is left is profit per order. Divide the price by the profit before ads to get your breakeven ROI, the lowest GMV Max ROI at which ads stop losing money. The calculator below does all of this as you type.
Many TikTok Shop sellers know their revenue and their product cost, and very little in between. Then the settlement statement arrives and the margin is half of what they expected.
This page gives you a working profit calculator, explains each cost line with current TikTok sources, and shows how to set a price that leaves room for creators and ads. It is part of our product series, which starts with our framework for finding TikTok Shop winning products, where this margin test is one of the five gates.
The unit economics of one TikTok Shop order
Unit economics means the revenue and costs attached to a single order. On TikTok Shop, these are the lines that matter:
- Selling price: what the customer pays for the product, before tax.
- Landed product cost: unit cost plus freight, duties and prep, divided by units.
- Shipping and fulfillment: label cost, or your FBT fee, plus packaging. TikTok’s shipping guide gives an FBT example of $4.28 for a one unit order of 4 oz or less. Our comparison of FBT vs 3PL vs self fulfillment shows how to work out this number for each setup.
- Referral fee: TikTok’s Seller University fee page states a 6% referral fee per order from April 1, 2024, with a 5% to 6% range by category, calculated on customer payment plus platform discount, minus tax. Confirm your category’s current rate in Seller Center and on your settlement statements.
- Affiliate commission: the rate you pay creators. If they are on custom commissions, use the average weighted by the sales each one drives. FastMoss’s June 2026 cost guide reported that most sellers land between 5% and 20%.
- Ad cost per order: your GMV Max spend divided by the orders it drives. GMV Max reports ROI as revenue divided by ad spend, so ad cost per order is roughly price divided by ROI.
- Other costs: seller funded coupons, free creator samples, returns, and the refund administration fee, which TikTok’s fee page sets at 20% of the referral fee on refunded orders, capped at $5 per SKU. If you enroll in Smart Promotion, its fee of 3.5% of shop GMV outside campaign periods, higher during campaigns, belongs here too.
TikTok Shop profit calculator
Enter your numbers below. Results update as you type. Use per order averages; if you are unsure of a value, start with the defaults and adjust.
| Referral fee per order | $1.80 |
|---|---|
| Affiliate commission per order | $4.50 |
| Profit before ads (contribution) | $10.70 |
| Ad cost per order used | $4.00 |
| Profit per order | $6.70 |
| Margin after ads | 22.3% |
| Breakeven ROI | 2.80 |
| ROI needed for target margin | 4.84 |
Ads are profitable at any ROI above 2.80.
How the calculator works
- Profit before ads (contribution) = price minus product cost, shipping and fulfillment, other costs, referral fee and affiliate commission.
- Profit per order = contribution minus ad cost per order.
- Margin after ads = profit per order divided by price.
- Breakeven ROI = price divided by contribution. At this ROI, ad spend uses up the entire contribution.
- ROI needed for target margin = price divided by what is left after reserving your target margin from contribution.
The calculator applies the referral fee and commission to the selling price as a simplification. TikTok calculates the referral fee on customer payment plus platform discount, minus tax, so seller funded discounts reduce it slightly. Check the commission base in your affiliate plan settings.
Where to find each number
The calculator is only as good as its inputs. Pull each one from a record, not from memory:
- Landed cost: supplier invoices plus freight, duties, inspection and prep, divided by the units received in that shipment.
- Shipping and fulfillment: the shipping deductions on recent orders in Seller Center, your 3PL invoices, or the FBT Rate Card for your weight tier. Use the average across your real order mix.
- Referral fee: the fee lines on your settlement statements. Divide total referral fees by the revenue they were charged on to get your effective rate.
- Affiliate commission: the rates in your open and targeted affiliate plans, weighted by how much each plan sells.
- Ad cost per order: GMV Max spend divided by attributed orders for the last 7 to 14 days, or enter the ROI you actually achieved.
- Other costs: sample spend divided by orders, plus refunds and return shipping divided by orders, plus packaging.
Recalculate monthly. Fees, commission mix and ROI drift, and a product that was profitable at launch can slip without anyone noticing.

A worked example
The calculator’s defaults describe a $30 product with a $7 landed cost:
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Selling price | $30.00 |
| Landed product cost | -$7.00 |
| Shipping and fulfillment | -$5.00 |
| Other costs | -$1.00 |
| Referral fee (6%) | -$1.80 |
| Affiliate commission (15%) | -$4.50 |
| Contribution before ads | $10.70 |
| Ad cost per order | -$4.00 |
| Profit per order | $6.70 (22.3%) |
The breakeven ROI is $30 divided by $10.70, or 2.80. A $4 ad cost per order implies an ROI of 7.5, which is comfortable. If GMV Max delivers an ROI of 4 instead, ad cost rises to $7.50 and profit falls to $3.20 per order, a 10.7% margin. To keep a 15% margin ($4.50), ROI must be at least 4.84.
Why breakeven ROI drives your GMV Max target
GMV Max asks you to set a target ROI and then optimizes spend toward it. TikTok’s May 2026 GMV Max overview notes that recent updates factor affiliate commissions, coupons and referral fees into optimization, which makes an accurate view of your own costs more useful, not less.
Set the target above your breakeven ROI, or every ad driven order loses money. Set it too high and the campaign may struggle to spend. Our guide on how to set your GMV Max target ROI covers starting targets and how often to change them.
TikTok’s ROI protection program, available from February 25, 2026 according to Enrich Labs, can issue ad credits when a campaign’s ROI falls below 90% of the daily target on days with more than 20 orders, with exclusions. It softens bad days. It does not fix a target set below breakeven.
What the calculator leaves out
Profit per order here is a contribution figure, not net profit for the business. It does not include fixed overheads such as software, salaries, content production, agency fees or inventory financing, and it does not account for income tax.
Those costs still have to be paid from the total contribution across all orders. A useful check is to multiply profit per order by your expected monthly orders and compare it with your monthly fixed costs. If the first number is smaller, the shop needs a higher margin, more volume, or both.
How to price for margin
You can also work backward from the margin you want. Because the referral fee, commission, ad cost and target margin all scale with price, the formula is:
Price = fixed costs / (1 − referral % − commission % − target margin % − 1 / expected ROI)
Fixed costs here are landed cost, shipping and fulfillment, and other per order costs: $13 in our example. With a 6% referral fee, 15% commission, 15% target margin and an expected ROI of 4, the denominator is 1 − 0.06 − 0.15 − 0.15 − 0.25 = 0.39, so the price needs to be about $33.33.
| Expected ROI | Ad cost as % of price | Price needed for 15% margin |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 33.3% | $42.39 |
| 4 | 25.0% | $33.33 |
| 5 | 20.0% | $29.55 |
| 6 | 16.7% | $27.46 |
The table shows why low ROI is so expensive. Dropping from ROI 4 to ROI 3 means charging about $9 more for the same margin. Better listings and stronger creator videos raise conversion, which raises ROI. Our guide to TikTok Shop listing optimization covers the listing side.
How commission changes the math
Commission is the cost sellers adjust most often, usually upward to attract creators. Each point of commission comes straight out of contribution, so it raises your breakeven ROI. Using the same $30 example:
| Commission rate | Contribution before ads | Breakeven ROI |
|---|---|---|
| 10% | $12.20 | 2.46 |
| 15% | $10.70 | 2.80 |
| 20% | $9.20 | 3.26 |
| 25% | $7.70 | 3.90 |
Moving from 15% to 25% commission can be the right call if it brings in creators whose videos convert well, because better content tends to lift ROI. Just make sure the higher ROI you need is one your ads can realistically reach.
Bundles and multipacks
Fixed per order costs, especially fulfillment, weigh heavily on low prices. Selling two or three units per order spreads them out. TikTok’s FBT pricing reflects this: its shipping guide gives $4.28 for a single unit of 4 oz or less, but $1.56 per unit on orders of four or more units. Model a multipack as its own line in the calculator, with its own price, landed cost and fulfillment cost.
Three order types, three margins
Not every order carries every cost. Run the calculator three times to see your range:
| Order type | Commission | Ad cost | Profit per order (example) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Organic: your own video or Shop Tab search | None | None | $15.20 (50.7%) |
| Affiliate video, no ads | 15% | None | $10.70 (35.7%) |
| Affiliate video amplified by GMV Max at ROI 4 | 15% | $7.50 | $3.20 (10.7%) |
Your real margin is the blend. If 30% of orders are organic, 40% affiliate only and 30% ad amplified affiliate orders, the blended profit is about $9.80 per order, or 32.7%. Track your order mix in Seller Center and update the blend monthly, because it shifts as you scale ads.
Common margin mistakes
- Forgetting the commission on ad driven orders. When GMV Max promotes an affiliate video, you pay both the ad cost and the creator’s commission.
- Using product cost instead of landed cost. Freight and duties can add a meaningful share to unit cost.
- Ignoring returns and samples. Budget an allowance in other costs, especially in categories where fit or expectations drive returns.
- Treating revenue as cash. TikTok’s Dynamic Settlement and Reserve Policy describes holding a portion of each delivered order’s earnings for 30 days, so plan working capital around payout timing.
- Pricing at breakeven ROI. Breakeven is a floor, not a target. Leave room for discounts, test spend and bad weeks.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate profit on TikTok Shop?
Start with the selling price and subtract landed product cost, shipping and fulfillment, the referral fee, affiliate commission, ad cost per order and other costs such as samples and returns. What remains is profit per order, and dividing it by the price gives your margin.
What is breakeven ROI on TikTok Shop?
Breakeven ROI is the selling price divided by your profit before ads. It is the lowest GMV Max ROI at which ad spend does not lose money on an order. For example, a $30 product with $10.70 of profit before ads has a breakeven ROI of about 2.8.
How much does TikTok Shop take per sale?
TikTok’s Seller University fee page states a 6% referral fee per order from April 1, 2024, with some categories at 5%, calculated on customer payment plus platform discount minus tax. Shipping, creator commission, ads and optional programs such as Smart Promotion are separate costs, so confirm your current rate in Seller Center.
What margin should I aim for on TikTok Shop?
There is no universal number, but the margin after ads should leave room for discounts, returns and weeks when ROI dips. Many sellers set a target margin first and then use the price for margin formula to check whether the product can reach it at a realistic ROI.
