Quick answer: Fulfilled by TikTok (FBT) stores and ships your inventory from TikTok’s own fulfillment centers, adds a “Free 3 Day Delivery” tag to eligible products and removes logistics metrics such as late dispatch from your account health. A 3PL or your own warehouse gives you more control over packaging, multichannel stock and costs, but you carry the dispatch deadlines and metrics. Many shops end up with a hybrid: FBT for steady best sellers, a 3PL or in house team for everything else.

How you fulfill orders on TikTok Shop affects more than shipping cost. It changes how fast shoppers receive their orders, whether your listings carry a delivery badge, and which performance metrics can count against your account.

This guide compares the three main options in 2026, using TikTok’s current Seller University documentation for FBT fees, delivery speed and metric rules. It belongs to our product and fulfillment series, which starts with our framework for finding TikTok Shop winning products.

The three fulfillment models

Fulfilled by TikTok (FBT)

FBT is TikTok Shop’s in house fulfillment service. You send inventory in, and TikTok stores, picks, packs, ships and handles returns. TikTok’s shipping options guide, updated in September 2026, says FBT runs from 14 fulfillment centers and 2 hubs. You join through the Fulfilled by TikTok section of Seller Center or the FBT Portal.

Third party logistics (3PL)

A 3PL is an independent warehouse that stores your inventory and packs orders for you. For TikTok Shop orders, the 3PL typically prints labels through TikTok Shipping or, where your shop is eligible, ships under Seller Shipping with its own carrier accounts. Many 3PLs serve several sales channels from one pool of stock.

Self fulfillment

Self fulfillment means you or your team pack orders from your own space. The shipping side works the same way as with a 3PL: TikTok Shipping labels, or Seller Shipping if your shop qualifies.

How TikTok’s shipping options fit in

TikTok’s shipping options guide lists four ways to get a package to the customer:

  • TikTok Shipping (Upgraded): TikTok assigns the carrier for each order based on size, weight and destination. You print labels in Seller Center, and fees are deducted after delivery. Available to most sellers.
  • Collections by TikTok: an add on to Upgraded TikTok Shipping where couriers collect from your warehouse. It requires more than 50 average daily orders over the past 30 days and a warehouse in an eligible zip code area.
  • Seller Shipping: you use your own supported carrier and enter tracking yourself. TikTok describes it as available to select sellers only.
  • FBT: TikTok handles storage, packing and shipping end to end.

A 3PL or in house operation uses one of the first three. FBT replaces all of them for the products you send in.

Costs: what each option really costs per order

FBT fees in 2026

TikTok’s FBT Rate Card and shipping options guide set out the main charges. Some fee tables are published as images in Seller University, so check the full rate card for your product’s weight tier.

  • Fulfillment fee: for example, $4.28 for a one unit order of 4 oz or less, falling to $1.56 per unit for orders of 4 or more units. Fees rise with weight.
  • Chargeable weight: since May 1, 2026, units of 2 lb or less and 332 cubic inches or less are charged on actual weight. Larger units are charged on the greater of actual or dimensional weight (length x width x height, divided by 166).
  • Storage: free for the first 60 days of each inbound shipment. TikTok’s shipping guide lists $0.03 per cubic foot per day for days 61 to 90, and the rate card notes discounts of 14% to 43% on storage up to 270 days since December 15, 2025.
  • Inbound: sending stock directly to a fulfillment center carries no placement fee when you follow routing rules. Hub inbound is optional and priced by weight and hub. Routing noncompliance fees start at $0.50 per unit.
  • Returns: the earlier flat $3 per order return handling fee was replaced on June 1, 2026 with itemized per unit fees based on the return setting and outcome.
  • Free shipping: since June 16, 2025, FBT orders get free shipping by default with no minimum. If you opt out, orders under $30 carry a $5.99 shopper shipping fee and TikTok reimburses you $0.75 per unit on those orders.
  • Discounts: single unit items certified as Ships in Own Container (SIOC) can earn a discount of up to $0.80 per unit, and there is no surcharge for Alaska or Hawaii.

TikTok’s FBT overview also says FBT can reduce per order costs by about 20% to 35% on average compared with mainstream carriers, depending on product and route. Treat that as TikTok’s estimate and test it against your own numbers.

3PL and in house costs

3PL pricing varies widely, so get written quotes. Ask for every line: receiving per unit or per pallet, storage per bin or per pallet, pick and pack per order and per additional item, packaging materials, returns processing, monthly minimum spend and integration fees. Then add the TikTok Shipping label cost for your typical package, which TikTok calculates on the greater of actual or volumetric weight and deducts after delivery.

For self fulfillment, the cash costs are packaging and labels, but the real cost is time. Price your own hour honestly. Packing 30 orders a day can take several hours that could go into product research, creators or ads.

Speed: how fast orders reach customers

For FBT, TikTok’s FBT guide gives these figures for eligible items: packages ship within 24 hours of the order, 98% of FBT orders ship within 1 calendar day, 80% are delivered within 3 days, and the 3 day service covers over 80% of US orders.

For orders you or a 3PL ship, TikTok’s Fulfillment Policy sets the deadlines: regular orders must reach In Transit within 2 business days of Awaiting Shipment, and must be delivered within 6 business days. Orders that are still not shipped 5 business days after Awaiting Shipment can be canceled automatically. Business days exclude weekends and US federal holidays.

A well run 3PL can match FBT’s dispatch speed. Delivery time then depends on the carrier and on how far the warehouse is from your customers. A single warehouse on one coast will struggle to reach the whole country in three days.

Badges and visibility

The FBT delivery tag is the clearest visibility difference between the options. TikTok’s FBT guide says eligible products receive a “Free 3 Day Delivery” tag that helps them stand out in search and recommendations, and they can be featured in an FBT channel during promotions.

TikTok also cites its own internal data: FBT products saw a 40% or greater increase in daily product views and an average 15% or greater increase in conversion rate after inbounding, and orders with the 3 day tag had a 15% to 20% higher conversion rate than the same product without it. These are TikTok’s numbers, not independent results, but they explain why many sellers test FBT on their best sellers first.

Metrics and account health

This is the factor sellers most often underestimate. Under TikTok’s Fulfillment Policy:

  • FBT orders are exempt from Valid Tracking Rate, On Time Delivery Rate and Late Dispatch Rate calculations, and from packaging requirements. TikTok’s FBT guide adds that logistics related issues, including late dispatches, cancellations, nonbuyer fault returns and negative reviews, are excluded from seller performance metrics.
  • TikTok Shipping orders are exempt from Valid Tracking Rate. They count toward On Time Delivery Rate, but from June 2026 a late delivery for Upgraded TikTok Shipping and Collections by TikTok counts against you only if you missed the dispatch deadline.
  • Seller Shipping orders are measured on every metric, and you handle lost or damaged claims directly with your carrier.

The thresholds are strict: a Late Dispatch Rate at or below 4% is recommended, with enforcement possible above 10%, and On Time Delivery Rate must stay at or above 80%. Our guide to TikTok Shop shipping requirements covers every deadline and penalty in detail.

Returns under each model

Returns follow the same customer policy whichever model you use. TikTok’s US return policy gives customers 30 calendar days from delivery by default, and for returns dropped off through the platform the seller pays return shipping across the listed return reasons. What changes is who receives and processes the returned item.

  • FBT: TikTok receives returns and charges itemized per unit fees based on the return setting and outcome, such as disposal or return to you. For refund only requests on FBT orders, TikTok’s return policy says it may review the request on your behalf and reimburse you within 1 to 14 business days.
  • 3PL: the 3PL receives, inspects and restocks or disposes of the item under your contract. Agree inspection standards in writing so sellable stock goes back on the shelf quickly.
  • Self fulfillment: you handle every return, including inspection, photos for disputes and restocking.

Whoever processes returns, you still have to respond to return requests in Seller Center within TikTok’s review deadlines, or requests may be approved automatically.

The trade offs of FBT

FBT is not automatically the right answer. Weigh these points before you send inventory in:

  • Inventory is committed. Stock in FBT serves TikTok Shop orders. If sales slow, you pay storage after 60 days or pay to remove it, and TikTok’s rate card lists $0.39 per lb for removal freight through its carrier.
  • Slow sellers cost more. Storage is charged daily after the free period, so slow moving products tie up space and cash you could use for faster sellers.
  • Inbound rules are strict. Labeling, packaging and routing must follow FBT requirements, and noncompliance carries fees.
  • Brand presentation is limited. If custom packaging, printed inserts or kitted gift sets are central to your brand, confirm what FBT supports before committing. TikTok’s rate card notes that value add services launched in May 2026 by invitation only.
  • Multichannel brands need two pools. Splitting stock between FBT and a 3PL adds forecasting work and freight.

Questions to ask a 3PL before you sign

If you choose a 3PL, its ability to meet TikTok’s deadlines matters more than its storage rate. Ask these questions before signing:

  1. What is your daily order cutoff, and what share of orders received before it leave the building the same day?
  2. Do you integrate with TikTok Shop directly, and how quickly do orders and tracking sync?
  3. How do you handle sudden order spikes after a video takes off, and how much notice do you need?
  4. Who is responsible when a late dispatch is caused by your team, and how is that reflected in the contract?
  5. How do you process creator sample orders and LIVE order surges?
  6. What are your returns inspection standards and turnaround times?

A 3PL that cannot answer the spike question clearly is a risk on TikTok Shop, where a single creator video can multiply daily orders overnight.

When to switch

Most shops move through stages. These signals tell you when the current setup is holding you back.

Signal Consider
You are testing products and shipping a handful of orders a day Self fulfillment with TikTok Shipping labels
Packing is eating your week, or late dispatches are creeping up A 3PL or FBT
One SKU sells steadily every day and is small and durable FBT for that SKU
You already use a 3PL for Shopify or Amazon Keep the 3PL, pilot FBT on top TikTok SKUs
You ship more than 50 orders a day from your own warehouse in an eligible area Collections by TikTok as a pickup add on
Products are bulky, fragile or need kitting and custom inserts A specialist 3PL
Your On Time Delivery Rate is near 80% Move top sellers to FBT, or add a second warehouse

How to run an FBT pilot

  1. Pick one to three SKUs with steady daily sales and simple packaging.
  2. Send roughly 30 to 45 days of forecast stock, so it sells through inside the 60 day free storage window.
  3. Record each SKU’s conversion rate, cost per order, delivery time and refund rate for the four weeks before inbounding.
  4. Compare the same numbers for four weeks after the products go live in FBT.
  5. Keep FBT for the SKUs where the margin after fees holds up, and expand only after a clean result.

Next steps

There is no single best fulfillment model for TikTok Shop. FBT offers speed, a delivery badge and protection from logistics metrics. A 3PL offers control and multichannel efficiency. Self fulfillment offers the lowest cash cost while volume is small. The right answer usually changes as your shop grows, and a hybrid often beats any single option.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fulfilled by TikTok worth it?

It often is for small, steady selling products, because FBT orders get a Free 3 Day Delivery tag on eligible items and are exempt from late dispatch and on time delivery metrics. It is less suited to bulky, fragile or slow moving products, where storage and fulfillment fees can outweigh the benefits.

How much does Fulfilled by TikTok cost?

TikTok’s 2026 shipping guide gives the example of $4.28 for a one unit order of 4 oz or less, falling to $1.56 per unit for orders of four or more units, with higher fees for heavier items. Storage is free for the first 60 days of each inbound shipment. Check the full FBT Rate Card in Seller Center for your weight tier.

Can I use a 3PL with TikTok Shop?

Yes. A 3PL can pack your TikTok Shop orders and ship them with TikTok Shipping labels, or with its own carriers under Seller Shipping if your shop is eligible. You remain responsible for the dispatch deadline and fulfillment metrics on those orders.

Can I use FBT and my own warehouse at the same time?

Many sellers run a hybrid, sending their best selling SKUs to FBT and fulfilling the rest from a 3PL or their own space. The main cost is extra forecasting and freight, since stock is split between two locations.
