Quick answer: GMV Max builds ads from a pool of product anchored videos on your connected accounts, Spark Ads posts, authorized affiliate videos and product cards, so the size and quality of that pool largely decides how far a campaign can scale. Keep auto select on, get affiliates to authorize their posts, add Spark codes for creator videos you pay for, and publish new product videos every week. Use the video report, testing acceleration, Creative boost and exclusion filters to steer what the system learns.

Once TikTok automated targeting, bidding and placements, creative became the main lever an advertiser still controls in TikTok Shop ads. GMV Max can only scale the videos it has, and it learns faster when it has more good options to compare.

This post explains where GMV Max gets its creative, how much you need, how to authorize affiliate content and Spark codes, which product videos tend to work, and how to test inside a campaign that does its own testing. For the full system, including targets, budgets and reporting, see our complete GMV Max guide.

Why creative is the lever you still control

In a GMV Max campaign you set products, a target ROI and a budget. TikTok handles the rest: which videos run, who sees them, where they appear and when ads are created or paused. TikTok’s help center describes the process as creative exploration: the system tests eligible creatives, compares performance signals and gradually gives more delivery to the ones with stronger potential.

That has two consequences. First, a thin pool caps your scale, because the system runs out of good options at your target ROI. Second, weak creative hides behind automation. When results drop, the cause is often the videos, not the settings.

Where GMV Max gets its videos

Source What it is How it gets into GMV Max
Your TikTok accounts Videos with product anchor links posted by accounts connected to the shop Included automatically in auto select mode; you can link additional TikTok accounts
Spark Ads posts Organic posts, yours or a creator’s, authorized to run as ads Added to the Creative Library in the ad account, often with a video code
Affiliate posts Videos made by affiliate creators who promote your products for commission Included automatically once the creator authorizes them and “Affiliate post” is the video source
Product cards and generated formats Product card ads, shoppable carousels, auto generated product videos Created by the system, depending on what is available in your account
Direct uploads (LIVE) Videos uploaded straight into a LIVE GMV Max campaign Where available, prioritized in exploration over standard Ads Manager uploads

TikTok recommends auto select video mode over choosing videos by hand. Auto select explores all existing and future eligible videos with no cap, and in auto select mode, videos previously used in Video Shopping Ads can be included even without anchor links. TikTok also notes that affiliate videos often perform better and lift incremental GMV, and that more product anchored videos means more GMV potential.

How much creative you need

TikTok publishes firm numbers for LIVE GMV Max: at least 50 to 70 videos in the “In queue” status for stable exploration, or 5 to 10 new videos a day. For Product GMV Max it sets no minimum and says no creative minimum is needed to start, but it is explicit that a diverse, sufficient pool helps the system find winners.

For planning Product GMV Max, think in new videos per hero product per week, scaled to spend. The table below is a starting assumption, not a TikTok rule; your own fatigue rate will set the real number.

Daily spend on the product New videos per week (starting assumption) Typical sources
Under $200 3 to 5 Your own account plus your first affiliates
$200 to $1,000 5 to 10 Add affiliate authorizations and paid creator videos via Spark codes
Over $1,000 10 or more Add retained creators, extra brand accounts and variations of winners

Count only videos that can actually run: anchored to the right product, authorized where needed and not rejected. A library of 200 videos where 150 are unauthorized affiliate posts is a library of 50.

Authorizing affiliate content

Affiliate videos are usually the largest and most varied source of creative a shop has. Getting them into GMV Max takes a few steps, based on TikTok’s help center:

  1. Set up the collaboration. Create an Open Collaboration (or a targeted, creator specific one) in the Affiliate Center of Seller Center, with commission rates set per product.
  2. Ask creators to authorize. Creators can authorize all their affiliate posts at once (Affiliate Mass Authorization) in the TikTok app, or share a video code for a single post. The same post can be authorized both ways.
  3. Use the right source. In GMV Max, set the video source to “Affiliate post.” Authorized affiliate videos featuring your selected products are then included automatically.
  4. Fill gaps. If a specific video does not appear, request authorization from the creator or add it with its video code under the “TikTok post” source.
  5. Chase the right creators first. In the video report, the “Authorization Recommended” status marks videos that generated orders but are not authorized for ads. Those creators are your first calls.

Commission on ad driven orders

When ads use affiliate posts, the creator can earn commission on resulting orders. Some sellers are invited to set a separate Shop Ads commission rate, anywhere from 1% to 80%, for orders that come from ads using affiliate posts. If it is off, the standard rate applies. TikTok’s example: a 10% standard rate and a 5% Shop Ads rate means an organic affiliate order pays 10% and an ad driven one pays 5%. A rate set in a targeted collaboration overrides the Open Collaboration Shop Ads rate for that creator.

Know the limits

  • You cannot change the product link on an affiliate post, so a video anchored to the wrong product stays that way.
  • If the affiliate collaboration ends, ads using that creator’s videos pause.
  • Affiliate videos used in GMV Max receive a commercial content label. Sellers posting organic brand content should turn on the content disclosure setting; in the EU and UK, organic content in a GMV Max campaign is labeled automatically.

Finding creators who produce sellable videos is its own discipline. Our guide on how to find and recruit TikTok Shop creators covers search filters, vetting and outreach.

Short on videos that sell?

Spark codes and your own account

Spark Ads run an existing organic post as an ad from the account that posted it. For GMV Max, they are the way to bring in videos that are not affiliate posts: content from creators you pay a flat fee, UGC creators, or a second brand account. TikTok’s best practices recommend adding Spark Ads posts to the Creative Library and linking additional TikTok accounts to widen the pool.

When you pay a creator for a video, agree in writing on ad usage: that they will provide an authorization code, for how long the code should stay valid, and what happens if they delete the post. Settle those terms before the video goes live, not after it starts selling.

Your own brand account matters too. Every product anchored video it posts becomes a candidate in auto select. A brand account that posts a few anchored videos a week gives GMV Max a steady baseline of content you fully control.

Product videos that tend to work

TikTok’s creative exploration guidance lists the practices it sees improve weak pools: find repeatable patterns in top creatives, test stronger hooks and clearer openings, show product value earlier and more clearly, tighten pacing and storytelling, use stronger offers and calls to action, and build new variations from proven winners. In practice, that translates into a checklist:

  • Product in the first seconds. Show the product, or the problem it solves, before any intro.
  • One clear claim. One benefit per video, demonstrated rather than described.
  • Real use. Hands, faces, homes. Demonstrations beat studio shots for most categories.
  • Price and offer. Say what it costs or what the deal is; buyers on TikTok Shop are deciding now.
  • A direct call to action. Point to the product link or the cart.
  • Correct anchor. The product link must match the product shown.
  • Variety in the pool. TikTok specifically recommends varying hooks, openings, pacing, creators, offers and demonstrations.

Keep claims to what you can substantiate and follow TikTok Shop’s content and product policies for your category. A rejected video cannot run, and repeated violations put far more than one campaign at risk.

Testing inside an automated campaign

You cannot run a clean split test inside GMV Max, because the system decides what each video gets. You can still test, by controlling what goes in and reading what comes out.

Read the video report

In Seller Center or the GMV Max tab in Ads Manager, the product and creatives report shows each video’s status and results. TikTok’s reporting guide lists statuses such as In Queue (ready to test), Learning (being tested), Delivering (regularly promoted), Authorization Recommended, Boosting and Boosted, alongside gross revenue, cost, orders, click rates and 2 second and 6 second view rates. TikTok’s newer creative exploration view groups videos as available for testing, in exploration, gathering signals or ineligible.

TikTok recommends judging video quality by gross revenue rather than cost per order or ROI, because those cost based metrics include organic orders and can make high spend videos look worse than they are.

Use the tools that steer exploration

  • Accelerate testing for new videos helps newer or promising creatives get tested sooner, where available.
  • Creative boost adds budget to a chosen video to test or amplify it. On LIVE GMV Max it is a separate daily budget with a $10 minimum, reports only impressions, cost, CTR and views, and is excluded from ROI protection.
  • Bulk exclusion filters remove up to 200 videos from paid traffic in auto select mode, by caption keyword, posting date or affiliate handle. Excluded videos can still appear organically, and removing a filter later does not mean they will be delivered again.

A weekly test rhythm

When Task
Monday Review last week’s top videos by gross revenue; pick one hypothesis to test (for example a new hook style or a different creator type)
Tuesday Brief creators and your team on 5 to 10 variations built around that hypothesis
Wednesday to Friday Publish product anchored videos; request authorization for new affiliate posts
Friday Check statuses: are new videos moving from In Queue to Learning? Authorize anything flagged
Following week Compare the batch’s gross revenue with the previous batch; keep what wins and build variations from it

Keep notes on each batch. Over a few months, the pattern of what earns delivery for your products becomes your creative brief.

Creative for LIVE GMV Max

LIVE campaigns need a different kind of video. In LIVE GMV Max, Video to LIVE ads are short clips whose job is to pull viewers into the stream, while LIVE to LIVE promotes the stream itself. By default, the campaign uses all available videos from the TikTok account you selected.

TikTok’s LIVE guidance is specific:

  • Volume: at least 50 to 70 videos in the In queue status, or 5 to 10 new videos a day.
  • Content: a clear call to action, shorter videos, and highlights of LIVE promotions and hero products, which TikTok says can raise click through rate.
  • Preferred videos: select up to 10 videos most relevant to each stream and update the selection before every session.
  • Direct uploads: where available, upload up to 50 videos at a time (and up to 10,000 a month per account), each under 100MB. Uploads pass a short prereview, and TikTok suggests teasers for an upcoming LIVE.

The practical approach is to treat every stream as a content shoot. Clip the best demonstrations, offers and questions from today’s LIVE, and they become tomorrow’s Video to LIVE ads and, with product anchors, Product GMV Max candidates too. A single 4 hour stream can supply a week of short videos if someone is assigned to cut them.

Creative fatigue and refresh

Even strong videos wear out as the same audiences see them repeatedly. Watch for a winning video’s gross revenue falling week over week, a shrinking share of videos in Delivering, and campaign ROI drifting down while settings stay the same. The fix is new supply, not a new target. If you raise the target ROI to compensate, the system has fewer auctions it can win with tired videos, and spend falls.

Two settings choices also limit exploration. TikTok’s guidance is to set a sufficient budget and avoid an overly restrictive ROI goal so creatives can gather meaningful signals; our post on choosing your GMV Max target ROI shows how to find a target that is profitable without choking delivery. If spend has already collapsed, start with our checklist for GMV Max not spending.

Bringing it together

A healthy GMV Max creative operation has four parts: a brand account posting anchored product videos every week, an affiliate program whose creators authorize their posts, a set of paid creators delivering Spark coded videos, and a weekly review that turns the video report into the next brief.

If building that machine is the bottleneck, our GMV Max management service runs the creative supply alongside the campaigns. Book a free strategy call to see what your current pool can support.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get affiliate videos into GMV Max?

Set up a collaboration with the creator in Seller Center, then ask them to authorize their posts, either all at once with Affiliate Mass Authorization or one at a time with a video code. In GMV Max, set the video source to Affiliate post. If a video still does not appear, request authorization or add it with its video code under the TikTok post source.

How many videos does GMV Max need?

TikTok sets no minimum for Product GMV Max but says a diverse, sufficient pool helps the system find winners. For LIVE GMV Max it recommends at least 50 to 70 videos in queue, or 5 to 10 new videos a day.

Can I stop a specific video from running in GMV Max?

Yes. Bulk exclusion filters remove up to 200 videos from paid traffic in auto select mode, filtered by caption keyword, posting date or affiliate handle. Excluded videos can still appear organically, and removing a filter later does not mean they return to delivery.

Do creators earn commission when their video runs as a GMV Max ad?

Yes, ads using affiliate posts can generate commission for the creator. Some sellers are invited to set a separate Shop Ads commission rate between 1% and 80% for ad driven orders; otherwise the standard rate applies.
