Quick answer: Since February 25, 2026, TikTok automatically adds ad credits to GMV Max campaigns on days when campaign ROI falls below 90% of the daily target ROI and the campaign records more than 20 orders. The credit equals total cost minus gross revenue divided by (0.9 × daily target). Days with certain manual target changes, pauses, product edits, Max delivery or boost budgets are excluded, and there is nothing to file: eligible credits appear in your account on their own.
ROI protection is one of the more useful additions to GMV Max, and one of the most misunderstood. It does not promise that a campaign will hit its target, and it does not cover every bad day. It does put a partial floor under qualifying days, as long as you run the campaign in a way that keeps those days eligible.
This post covers how the program works, the 90% threshold and the 20 order rule, how credits are calculated with worked numbers, every exclusion, and how to check what you have received. For how ROI protection fits into the wider system, see our complete GMV Max guide.
What ROI protection is
TikTok describes ROI protection as a feature that automatically issues ad credits when a campaign’s ROI falls below a set threshold despite following GMV Max guidelines and best practices. The key facts from TikTok’s help center (updated September 2026):
- Start date: available from February 25, 2026.
- Coverage: campaigns created in Seller Center on desktop, the Seller Center mobile app or TikTok Ads Manager.
- Scope: applied per campaign, for the campaign’s lifetime. Eligible campaigns show a “ROI protected” badge in the campaign list.
- Basis: calculated daily, in the ad account’s time zone, with only the most recent 60 days of history reviewed.
- Terms: credits are subject to TikTok’s Ad Credit Terms, and TikTok can revoke them for unusual behavior, fraud or policy violations.
The two eligibility conditions
A campaign day qualifies when both of these are true:
- The 90% threshold. The campaign’s ROI for the day is below 90% of the daily target ROI. With a target of 3.0, the line is 2.7.
- The 20 order rule. The campaign has more than 20 orders that day. Exactly 20 does not qualify.
What “daily target ROI” means
If you never change the target ROI during a day, the daily target is simply your target. If it changes, TikTok blends the targets by revenue: daily target = total gross revenue ÷ the sum of (gross revenue ÷ ROI target) for each period. Calculations run hourly, and if more than one target applies within the same hour, the lowest one is used. On Promotion days, the promotion day target is used.
Newly created campaigns can be covered on the day they are created, even without a full 24 hours, as long as they meet the conditions. Beyond that, TikTok recommends running campaigns for at least a full day, because GMV Max optimizes to the day and intraday swings are expected.
Five example days
| Day | Target | Actual ROI | Orders | Other events | Eligible? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 3.0 | 2.4 | 85 | None | Yes: below 2.7 with more than 20 orders |
| B | 3.0 | 2.75 | 90 | None | No: above the 2.7 line |
| C | 3.0 | 2.1 | 18 | None | No: 20 orders or fewer |
| D | 3.0 raised to 3.4 | 2.2 | 70 | Manual target increase (Product) | No: day of the change excluded |
| E | 3.0 | 2.3 | 120 | Price edited on a promoted product | No: product edit day excluded |
How the credit is calculated
TikTok’s formula:
Ad credit = total cost − (total gross revenue ÷ (daily ROI target × 0.9))
For Day A above, with $1,000 of cost and $2,400 of gross revenue: $1,000 − ($2,400 ÷ 2.7) = $1,000 − $888.89 = $111.11 in credit.
TikTok’s own example shows the blended target at work. From 10 to 11 a.m. the target was 10, with $200 of revenue and $10 of cost. From 11 a.m. to noon the target was 5, with $100 of revenue and $50 of cost. The daily target is 300 ÷ (200 ÷ 10 + 100 ÷ 5) = 300 ÷ 40 = 7.5. Total cost was $60, so the credit is 60 − (300 ÷ 6.75), roughly $15.56.
What the credit actually restores
Rearrange the formula and a useful fact appears: after the credit, your net cost equals gross revenue ÷ (0.9 × target). In other words, on a qualifying day your effective ROI becomes 0.9 × target, not the full target. On Day A, net cost is $888.89 against $2,400 of revenue, an effective ROI of 2.7.
That gives you a planning rule. If you want qualifying days to land at or above breakeven in reported terms, set the target at or above breakeven ÷ 0.9. With a breakeven ROI of 2.25, that is a target of at least 2.50. Our guide to setting your GMV Max target ROI shows how to calculate breakeven in the first place.
Want every eligible day to stay eligible?
TokVendors manages GMV Max changes on a set schedule so targets, edits and tests do not quietly cost you ROI protection.
Every exclusion, in one table
The exclusions matter as much as the rule. Based on TikTok’s help center:
| Exclusion | Applies to | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Manually raising the target, or lowering it more than once in a day | Product GMV Max | No protection for the day of the change |
| Manually adjusting the target more than 2 times | LIVE GMV Max | No protection for the day of the change |
| Pausing or deleting the campaign | Both | No protection for the day of the change |
| Editing campaign products | Both | Days with product edits are not covered |
| Products or LIVE rooms using Max delivery | Both | Listed as ineligible |
| Creative boost budgets | Both | Boost spend is not covered |
| LIVE viewer boost budget | LIVE GMV Max | Not covered |
| Accounts, shops or ads suspended or stopped for any reason | Both | Ineligible |
One helpful carve out: target changes made by the system for Mega LIVE or Promotion Day are not treated as manual changes. If a campaign moves into a promotion day or Mega LIVE with a different ROI, that ROI becomes the reference for the day.
How to check your credits
There is no claim form. If a campaign day is eligible, TikTok says the ad credit is automatically added to your account. Your job is to verify that what arrives matches what you expected.
- Open the campaign list in Seller Center or TikTok Ads Manager.
- Find a campaign with the “ROI protected” badge and hover over it.
- Select View history to see each day’s status, credit amount and actual ROI.
- Remember that history covers the last 60 days and uses the ad account’s time zone, which may differ from the time zone you use for reporting.
A weekly reconciliation habit
Once a week, list each campaign day with its orders, ROI, target, any changes you made and any credit received. For each day that looks eligible but shows no credit, check the exclusions first: a product edit, a second target decrease, a pause or a Max delivery window explains most gaps. If none applies, raise it with TikTok support with the campaign name, dates and your figures.
Then reconcile money, not just ROI. Net ad cost for the week is total cost minus credits, and that is the number to compare with contribution when you judge profitability.
A worked week
Here is an illustrative Product GMV Max week with a steady target of 3.0, so the 90% line is 2.7.
| Day | Cost | Gross revenue | ROI | Orders | Note | Credit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mon | $900 | $2,880 | 3.20 | 96 | Above line | $0 |
| Tue | $1,000 | $2,400 | 2.40 | 80 | Eligible | $111.11 |
| Wed | $950 | $2,470 | 2.60 | 82 | Eligible | $35.19 |
| Thu | $1,000 | $2,300 | 2.30 | 77 | Product price edited | $0 |
| Fri | $1,100 | $3,520 | 3.20 | 110 | Above line | $0 |
| Sat | $400 | $880 | 2.20 | 19 | 20 orders or fewer | $0 |
| Sun | $1,050 | $2,625 | 2.50 | 88 | Eligible | $77.78 |
The week’s cost is $6,400 against $17,075 of gross revenue, a reported ROI of about 2.67. Credits total about $224, so net cost is about $6,176 and the effective ROI is about 2.76. That is still below the 3.0 target, which is the point: protection narrows the gap on qualifying days, it does not close it.
Thursday is the lesson. Without the price edit, that day would have earned $1,000 − ($2,300 ÷ 2.7), or about $148.15, in credit. A scattered edit cost more than all of Wednesday’s protection. Saturday shows the other limit: a weak, low volume day gets nothing, whatever its ROI.
LIVE GMV Max specifics
The same formula applies to LIVE campaigns, with three differences worth planning around. You can make up to two manual target changes in a day without losing that day. Creative boost and LIVE viewer boost budgets sit outside the calculation, so boosted spend is never credited. And Max delivery on a LIVE campaign only takes effect while the room is active, but any Max delivery use is listed as ineligible, so keep it to planned event days.
Habits that keep days eligible
- Batch product edits. Price, title, image and other product changes remove protection for the day. Make them together, on a planned day, rather than scattered through the week.
- Change targets deliberately. On Product GMV Max, a single decrease in a day keeps the day eligible; any increase does not. Lower one step at a time and raise rarely.
- Do not pause to slow spend. Pausing voids the day. Budget changes do not appear in TikTok’s exclusion list, so lowering the budget is the gentler tool.
- Ring fence Max delivery and boosts. Treat them as planned, unprotected experiments with their own budgets.
- Use Promotion days for events. System made target changes do not count as manual, so let the feature handle event targets instead of editing by hand.
- Keep daily orders above 20. Small campaigns rarely qualify. Promoting more of your proven products, where margins allow, makes the 20 order rule easier to meet.
What ROI protection does not do
- It does not restore your full target. Credits cover the gap below 90% of target, not the gap below 100%.
- It does not cover low volume days. Twenty orders or fewer means no credit, whatever the ROI.
- It does not measure profit. The calculation uses gross revenue, which includes organic and affiliate orders on promoted products and adds back discounts. A protected day can still lose money if your breakeven is above 0.9 × target.
- It is not cash. Credits are ad credits under TikTok’s terms and can be revoked for unusual activity or policy violations.
- It does not fix a campaign that will not spend. If delivery is the problem, see our checklist for GMV Max not spending.
Bottom line
ROI protection rewards disciplined operation: stable targets, planned edits, no pauses and enough order volume. Set your target with the 0.9 rule in mind, keep a weekly reconciliation, and treat credits as a partial cushion rather than a plan.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to apply for GMV Max ROI protection?
No. ROI protection is applied automatically to eligible GMV Max campaigns, which show a ROI protected badge in the campaign list. If a day qualifies, TikTok adds the ad credit to your account without a claim.
Is ROI protection paid in cash?
No. ROI protection pays ad credits, which are subject to TikTok’s Ad Credit Terms. TikTok can revoke credits if it detects unusual behavior, fraud or policy violations.
Does changing my budget void ROI protection?
Budget changes do not appear in TikTok’s list of exclusions. The listed exclusions are certain manual target changes, pausing or deleting the campaign, product edits, Max delivery, Creative boost and LIVE viewer boost budgets, and suspensions. Check the current help article before relying on it, since rules can change.
Why didn't I get an ROI protection credit?
The most common reasons are 20 or fewer orders that day, an ROI that stayed above 90% of the daily target, or an exclusion such as a product edit, a target increase or a pause. Also check the ad account’s time zone, since days are calculated in that zone, and that the day falls within the last 60 days of history.
