Quick answer: To sell on TikTok Shop in the US you must be 18 or older, reside in the US, and verify your identity with a US passport, driver’s license, state ID or permanent resident card. Individuals also provide the last four digits of an SSN or an ITIN, proof of address if asked, a W 9 and a bank account in their name; businesses add an EIN, IRS issued proof of business, beneficial owner details and a bank account in the company’s legal name.
Most TikTok Shop applications that stall do not fail on eligibility. They fail on paperwork: a cropped ID, an address that differs by one line, or a bank account in a slightly different name. The good news is that every one of those problems is preventable.
This guide lists exactly what TikTok Shop asks US sellers for, as published in TikTok’s Seller University in October 2026, and how to fix the rejections we see most often. It is part of our complete guide on how to start a TikTok Shop, which covers everything that comes after approval.
Who can sell on TikTok Shop US
TikTok’s US registration guides set out these baseline requirements:
- Age: at least 18 years old.
- Residency: individual and sole proprietor sellers must reside in the US.
- ID: a valid US passport or passport card, US driver’s license, state ID, or permanent resident card.
- Unique contact details: a phone number and email address that have not been used to open another shop.
- Not a politician: politicians and political party affiliated accounts are prohibited from becoming sellers.
There is no follower minimum to open a shop. You register in Seller Center, either by logging in with an existing TikTok account or by signing up with an email or phone number. TikTok’s help center also notes that organization accounts cannot be used to sign up for a shop.
Step one: choose your seller type
Your seller type decides which documents you need. Printify’s 2026 registration guide notes that the type cannot be changed after registration, so pick the structure you intend to operate under long term.
| Seller type | What it means | Core documents |
|---|---|---|
| Individual | You sell under your own legal name with no business entity | US ID, last 4 of SSN or ITIN, proof of address if requested, W 9, personal bank account |
| Sole proprietorship | One owner, operating under a business name with an EIN | US ID, IRS issued proof of business if requested, W 9, bank account |
| Corporation or partnership | A registered entity such as a corporation, partnership or LLC | EIN, IRS issued proof of business, representative’s US ID, beneficial owner details, entity tax form, business bank account |
If you already have an LLC or corporation, register as that entity. Mixing a personal application with a business bank account, or the reverse, is one of the most common reasons for a name mismatch.
Documents for individual and sole proprietor sellers
Government ID
TikTok accepts four ID types and rejects all others. Each must show specific details:
| ID type | Must clearly show | What to upload |
|---|---|---|
| US passport or passport card | First and last name, photo, passport number, date of birth, expiration date | Passport biographic page; passport card front and back |
| US driver’s license or state ID | First and last name, license or ID number, date of birth, residential address, expiration date | Front and back |
| Permanent resident card | First and last name, USCIS number, date of birth, expiration date | Front and back |
If your state ID has no expiration date, TikTok’s individual registration guide says to enter 00 to 00 to 0000 in the expiration field.
Tax ID
Individuals enter the last four digits of their Social Security Number, or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) if they do not have an SSN. These must match the name and date of birth on your ID.
Proof of address, if requested
If TikTok cannot verify your address automatically, it will ask for one of these:
- A utility bill for gas, water, electricity, phone or internet
- A bank or credit card statement
- An insurance policy, such as life, health, Medicare or Medicaid, home or car insurance
The address on the document must match the address you typed into the registration form, character for character where possible. If your address is residential, TikTok’s guide explains that checking the certification box limits product pages to showing a partial address.
Proof of business, if requested (sole proprietors)
Sole proprietors using an EIN may be asked for an IRS issued document: IRS 147C, IRS 252C, or IRS CP 575 in versions A, B, E or G. It must show the legal business name, business address, EIN and the date of the notice.
Tax form
Individuals and sole proprietors submit a W 9. TikTok’s guide says you can start listing and selling before submitting tax documents, but once you earn $2,000 you must submit them to keep selling and receive payment. Printify’s guide adds that missing tax information can trigger 24% backup withholding on payouts, so submit the W 9 early.
Rather not fight the paperwork?
TokVendors prepares and checks every document before submission, then sets up shipping, payouts and listings so your shop is ready to sell on approval.
Documents for corporations, partnerships and LLCs
Business sellers go through more checks because TikTok verifies both the entity and the people behind it.
EIN and IRS proof of business
You need an Employer Identification Number (EIN) and, if requested, the same IRS documents listed above: 147C, 252C or CP 575 A, B, E or G. If your business name has changed, include a document showing both names, such as a certificate of amendment or an assumed name certificate. Enter your legal business name exactly as it appears on your IRS notice.
Entity tax forms
| Business type | Tax form listed by TikTok |
|---|---|
| General, limited or limited liability partnership | Form 1065 |
| C corporation | Form 1120 |
| S corporation | Form 1120 S |
| Single member LLC | Form 1040 |
| Multimember LLC | Form 1065 or Form 8832 |
The same $2,000 rule applies: tax documents become mandatory before you can keep receiving payment.
Beneficial owners and representatives
- Ultimate beneficial owners (UBOs): anyone who directly or indirectly owns at least 25% of the company must be declared. A business can have more than one UBO, and TikTok accepts a nonUS passport for UBO verification.
- US business representative: a US based person authorized to act for the company. TikTok’s definition runs from CEO to entry level staff, so the representative does not have to be an owner.
- Letter of authorization (LOA): sometimes required to confirm a person may act for the business. It must include the business name, the authorized representative’s name, the roles of both the primary and authorized representatives, signatures from both (digital or handwritten), and a duration that has not expired.
Pro tip: Choose your business representative carefully before you apply. An entity verification guide published by nvinc.com notes that the person on file is hard to change later and must stay available whenever TikTok asks for reverification.
Bank account and payout details
After verification, you link a bank account in Seller Center. TikTok’s setup guide asks for the account name, bank name, account number, email and address. The account name must match your registered legal name for individuals, or the company name for business sellers.
That match needs to be exact. If your LLC is “Northline Goods LLC” on the IRS letter, a bank account titled “Northline Goods” without the suffix can fail review. Fix the bank record or the application before you submit, not after.
File and photo rules that trip people up
| Accepted | Rejected |
|---|---|
| Files under 10 MB | Files larger than 10 MB |
| JPG, JPEG, PNG or PDF | Other formats |
| Valid, unexpired documents | Expired documents |
| The full document, edges visible | Cropped images with information cut off |
| Flat, straight on photos in good light | Angled photos, photos of a phone or computer screen |
| Physical plastic IDs | Paper forms of identification |
| IRS notices such as CP 575 or 147C | IRS website screenshots, SS 4 applications, tax returns, e file confirmations |
How the application works, step by step
TikTok’s guide for individual sellers lays out the flow below. Business applications follow the same shape with extra entity fields.
- Sign up. Log in with your TikTok account by QR code, or enter an email or phone number, confirm the verification code, and set a password. If you see “Account already exists,” use different contact details or log in to the existing account.
- Choose your business type. Individual, sole proprietorship, or corporation or partnership.
- Verify the account owner. Upload your ID and confirm legal name, date of birth, ID number, expiration date, residential address and the last four digits of your SSN or ITIN. These must match the ID exactly.
- Set shop preferences. Pick a shop name using letters, numbers and special characters, but avoid “official” and “flagship,” which TikTok blocks. Choose a primary product type and add contact information.
- Review and submit. Green checkmarks mean verified; yellow caution symbols mean a field needs a fix or a supporting document. Submit once everything shows as verified.
TikTok does not publish a fixed review time. Clean applications generally move faster; missing documents, mismatches and category qualification requests slow things down. If an application fails, TikTok sends an email explaining how to resubmit.
After approval: qualification and probation
Approval to open a shop is not the same as approval to sell everything. TikTok’s Restricted Products Policy requires qualification before you can list certain categories. Examples include beauty and personal care, shelf stable food and beverage, and medical devices, while dietary supplements and over the counter medications are invite only. You apply through the Qualification Center in Seller Center, and TikTok may request more documents during product review.
Brand owners face one more gate. Listing a branded product without brand authorization is treated as an intellectual property violation, which costs Account Health Rating points. Have the documents that show you own or control your brand, such as your trademark registration, ready before you list.
New shops also enter TikTok’s probation program, starting at the Beginner tier with a limit of 50 orders per day and 100 listings. Limits rise as you fulfill orders well and complete tasks. Violations in these early months deduct points from your rating, so read our guide to TikTok Shop account health before your first order ships.
Common rejection reasons and how to fix them
| Rejection reason | What usually happened | How to fix it |
|---|---|---|
| Name mismatch | Middle name, suffix or business suffix differs across ID, form, IRS letter or bank | Use the exact legal name from your ID or IRS notice everywhere, including the bank account title |
| Address mismatch | Suite number, abbreviation or old address differs from the proof document | Retype the address exactly as printed, or upload a recent document showing the current address |
| Unreadable or cropped ID | Edges cut off, glare, angle, or a photo of a screen | Lay the ID flat, shoot straight on in good light, include all four edges, upload front and back |
| Expired document | ID or insurance policy past its date | Renew or use another accepted document type |
| IRS document flagged as altered | Uploaded an editable PDF of an EIN confirmation | Print the IRS notice, scan the printout and upload the scan, as Printify recommends |
| Wrong IRS document | Uploaded an SS 4 application, tax return or website screenshot | Request a 147C letter from the IRS or use your CP 575 notice |
| Contact details already in use | Phone or email linked to another shop | Use a phone number and email not tied to any other shop |
| Restricted category | Primary products need qualification | Apply in the Qualification Center or start with an unrestricted category |
Two more cautions from compliance guides we reviewed. First, do not open a second shop with the same people or details after a rejection, because it can be linked back to the first. Second, avoid applying through a VPN, which can make your location look inconsistent with your documents.

Approval is the start line. The weeks after it, when you configure shipping, payouts, listings and your first creator outreach, shape how quickly your shop can grow and how healthy it stays. It also pays to understand TikTok Shop fees before you set prices.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need an LLC to sell on TikTok Shop?
No. US residents aged 18 or older can register as individual sellers using a US government ID, the last four digits of an SSN or an ITIN, and a bank account in their own name. An LLC or corporation makes sense if you plan to scale, hire or separate business liability, and the seller type generally cannot be changed after registration.
Can I use an ITIN instead of an SSN for TikTok Shop?
Yes. TikTok’s individual registration guide asks for the last four digits of your SSN, or an ITIN if you do not have an SSN. The details must match the name and date of birth on your ID.
Why was my TikTok Shop application rejected?
The most common causes are names or addresses that do not match across your ID, form, IRS documents and bank account, plus unreadable, cropped or expired documents. Editable IRS PDFs can also be flagged as altered. Check the email TikTok sends, correct the specific mismatch, and resubmit through Seller Center.
Can a nonUS resident open a TikTok Shop in the US?
Individual and sole proprietor sellers must reside in the US. A US registered company can apply with a US based business representative holding a valid US ID, and beneficial owners can verify with a nonUS passport. Tax treatment for foreign owned entities varies, so speak with a tax professional before applying.
Do I need to submit a W 9 before selling on TikTok Shop?
Not immediately. TikTok’s guide says you can start listing and selling without tax documents, but you must submit them once you earn $2,000 to keep selling and receive payment. Submitting early avoids payout interruptions.
